A man from Florida has been detained on accusations of fatally shooting his two brothers during their hunting trip in New York.
According to New York State Police, a call came in from one of the brothers just after 10 p.m. on Sunday night amidst a heated dispute. Authorities report that 65-year-old Scot Thompson allegedly used a rifle to kill his brothers, 69-year-old David Thompson and 70-year-old Mark Thompson, before escaping in David’s vehicle.
A vehicle alert was promptly issued, leading the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and Geneseo Police Department to locate the car and apprehend Scot Thompson. He now faces charges including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal use of a firearm.
Both Scot and David Thompson hailed from Florida, Scot residing in Englewood and David in Port Charlotte. Their brother Mark Thompson was from Canterbury, Connecticut.
The tragic incident occurred at a hunting cabin in the tiny town of Allen, nestled in southwestern New York.
John Sweeney, who is the brother-in-law of David Thompson, shared with WBBH that Scot Thompson reached out to David’s wife, Jane, to express his apologies.
“I just can’t believe it because I’ve hunted with all three of those guys,” Sweeney said. “I’ve met him before. I was surprised, so he called Jane last night and apologized.”
Sweeney said David and Jane Thompson had recently retired to Florida.
