A New Jersey man who was charged with possessing child pornography was ordered last week to remain jailed until trial.
Howell police took 61-year-old John Curley into custody in late September after allegedly discovering 43 images of child sexual abuse on his devices. Monmouth County prosecutors revealed that a further examination found printed photographs in his basement, some showing Girl Scouts and cheerleading squads. These items reportedly had notes like “rape,” “orgy,” and “I love pedos,” as per the Asbury Park Press.
Curley is also accused of making 18 videos where he describes himself as a “very proud baby pedophile” and discusses the abuse and murder of children.
In one such video, according to the Asbury Park Press, he stated, “The baby in the stroller, the baby in the stroller in Belmar. I see the baby. The baby is in the stroller. Oh my God, I want to rape it.”
In another video, Curley reportedly talked about raping and murdering a girl at a specific address.
Prior to his arrest, Curley reportedly called 911 about a neighbor who labeled him a pedophile, telling the dispatcher, “You know what happens next,” if the neighbor entered his property, according to the Asbury Park Press.
On the same night, Curley is said to have contacted Bays Head police to inquire if he was still barred from the library as he intended to visit. He allegedly mentioned his enjoyment of child pornography and claimed there was nothing authorities could do about it.
Prosecutors mentioned that Curley had been charged in 2009 with possession of obscene materials and enticing a child, charges later dropped as he was found incompetent to stand trial. They also noted that he had been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward for two weeks, just days before his recent arrest.
The breadth of evidence led Judge Jill O’Malley to keep Curley jailed until trial.
“I think he’s a risk to live victims. I think he’s very much a danger to every kid in Monmouth and Ocean County,” she said last Friday, the Asbury Park Press reported. “The defendant has a very serious deviant sexual interest that has been present for decades.”
Curley is due back in court on November 3.
