HAWTHORNE, Fla. – Adrion Keith Flowers, 27, is facing an attempted homicide charge in connection with a shooting that left a man injured in Hawthorne on August 24.
Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:47 p.m. to the 6000 block of SE 223rd Street after receiving a report of gunfire. They found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigators also recovered a single 9mm shell casing nearby.
After undergoing surgery, the victim told a deputy that Flowers had been upset with him for several weeks because he had spoken with a woman at a local store. The two briefly crossed paths at the Hawthorne Family Dollar on August 24 and exchanged words about the dispute, but the encounter did not initially turn physical, according to the victim.
The victim said he was driving his work truck along a road behind the Family Dollar when he heard someone order him to stop. He pulled over, stepped out and saw Flowers emerge from behind a nearby house.
According to the victim, Flowers showed him a firearm, pulled back the slide and then tucked the weapon into his waistband. The pair argued heatedly, but the victim said he believed they had resolved the disagreement once the confrontation began to cool. He then started walking back toward his truck.
The victim said he kept watch as Flowers got into his car before turning toward his own truck. When he heard Flowers’ vehicle approaching, he turned around and saw the driver’s-side window down. Flowers allegedly said something, pointed the firearm at him and fired. The victim reportedly sustained a broken femur.
Flowers was charged with attempted homicide without premeditation, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He was also booked on an alleged probation violation. His criminal record includes three nonviolent felony convictions and seven misdemeanor convictions, including one for a violent offense. Flowers was on probation for possessing more than 20 grams of marijuana. On September 9, Judge Denise Ferrero approved a State Attorney’s Office motion to detain him without bail pending trial.
