Local Trenton Employee Accused of Laptop Theft from Workplace

Staff report

HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – A 46-year-old resident of Trenton, Keith Eric Benson, faces grand theft charges following accusations of stealing a laptop from his employer in High Springs.

According to a High Springs Police Department (HSPD) officer, the theft was brought to light when a manager at Theme Works requested police intervention on February 2 after noticing the laptop was missing. An investigation revealed that the device’s IP address linked it to an internet connection in Trenton. Additionally, the username on the laptop had been altered to “Benson” the last time it was used.

The company’s IT team further verified that the login credentials for Benson’s work email on his mobile phone matched the same IP address associated with the stolen laptop.

To pinpoint the laptop’s location, a subpoena was issued by an HSPD detective, which identified the physical address tied to the IP as Benson’s home.

When questioned at Theme Works by law enforcement officials, Benson, after being read his Miranda rights, opted not to provide any statements. However, he reportedly asserted, unprompted, that the laptop was not at his residence. The arrest report does not clarify whether the laptop has been recovered.

Benson has been charged with grand theft. He has two felony convictions and one misdemeanor conviction. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $5,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
