Man Extradited From Guatemala to Face Child Sexual Battery Charges in Gainesville

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Inmer Misael Barrios-Osorio, 39, has been extradited from Guatemala to face criminal charges in Gainesville involving allegations that he sexually battered a young girl while he was living in the city from 2013 to 2015.

According to the case, the girl’s mother took her to a hospital in another city in May 2022 and told police that the child had recently disclosed allegations against her father. The mother reported that the victim said Barrios-Osorio had sexually battered her repeatedly over “numerous years in numerous Florida jurisdictions,” including during the family’s time in Gainesville between 2013 and 2015. Investigators said the victim was younger than 7 when Barrios-Osorio lived in Gainesville.

The victim reportedly gave investigators details about several specific incidents in Gainesville. She said Barrios-Osorio showed her pornographic videos on his phone and then instructed her to imitate what was shown, referring to the abuse as “games.” The four incidents she described to authorities all involved penetration, according to the complaint.

The girl also told investigators she became confused after learning at school that children should report sexual abuse. She said she asked Barrios-Osorio why she would get in trouble if she told anyone about the “games,” and he allegedly responded by sexually battering her again by force.

Investigators said the victim reported that Barrios-Osorio told her to blame her brother if anyone learned about the “games,” and that he coached her on how to lie about the ongoing abuse. The victim said that once she understood it was not a game, Barrios-Osorio threatened to rape her younger sister instead, prompting her to continue keeping the secret in an effort to protect her sister.

A medical evaluation was conducted at the hospital, and authorities said the findings were positive for sexual abuse.

A Gainesville Police Department detective filed a sworn complaint against Barrios-Osorio in 2023, charging him with four counts of sexual battery on a victim under 12 and one count of showing obscene material to a minor. The detective wrote that the charges were tied to the four specific incidents described by the victim, while noting that the overall “number of incidents is numerous and unknown.”

Barrios-Osorio could not be located at the time the sworn complaint was filed, but he has now been extradited from Guatemala and is also facing charges in other jurisdictions, including an active warrant for sexual battery in Lee County.

On July 23, Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard ordered Barrios-Osorio held without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
