Shortly after midnight, the tranquility at the Montauk Yacht Club is abruptly disrupted by a man’s distressed cries. Onlookers hurry to a vessel in the marina, where a man stands over an unconscious woman, pleading for assistance.

Soon, the marina is filled with the sound of sirens, but the woman isn’t rushed to the hospital—first responders declare the woman dead on the scene.

Once East Hampton Town Police and emergency responders declare Martha deceased, the county’s Homicide Squad arrives around 4 a.m. to take charge of the investigation. Initial inquiries and examinations did not clarify the cause of death, prompting an autopsy by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The autopsy did not show evidence of violence, and her final cause of death is pending further examination.
