Warrants are out for a couple from Wisconsin who missed their court appearance on Thursday. They face charges related to child abandonment after their two young children were discovered living “in a completely wild, unkempt state” in a filthy apartment in Waukesha.

Authorities were alerted to the situation on January 9 when they found the children, then ages 2 and 4, alone and distressed with their grandmother who has mobility challenges, WITI reported. The grandmother informed the police that the children’s parents, Jessica Borkert, 31, and James Domoracki, 36, had left the kids in her care two months earlier and hadn’t returned. She mentioned her struggles with the home’s stairs and her lack of transportation, which left her unable to get essentials like food, supplies, or medicine.

According to court records, the townhome was in “complete and total mess,” filled with clutter such as toys, garbage bags, clothes, and blankets. The documents note that the children were “covered in dirt, dust, and other unknown substances,” and slept on a bare mattress that was “stained and infested with cockroaches.”

The children were described as non-verbal and “in a completely wild, unkept state,” the document says. One boy had bruises, scratches, and dirt “all over him” with matted hair and the smell of urine.

Days after the children were discovered, a detective spoke with Borkert. She explained she had gotten work in the Grafton area and was staying at a motel in Oak Creek, which is further from Grafton than Waukesha. The documents said Borkert was “evasive” when asked how the couple was supporting the grandmother and the children in their absence. Domoracki reportedly told investigators he was try to send food and diapers “via Walmart shopping” but “ran out of money.”

The detectives reviewed the couple’s shared cell phen and found the “majority of text conversations” were indicative of “active participation in narcotics use and trade.”

The Waukesha County Freeman reported that Borkert and Domoracki were charged with two counts of child abandonment last month and ordered to appear in court Thursday. They didn’t, however, and now warrants have been issued for their arrest, WITI said.
