Parents Head Off on Florida Trip, Leaving Teen Daughter Home Alone With Dead Animals

A couple from upstate South Carolina is facing charges related to animal cruelty and neglect of their teenage daughter after they left for Florida, abandoning the girl in a house filled with deceased animals.

Police in Union responded to the residence on May 27, initially concerning the animals residing there. They discovered a 17-year-old girl, who connected them with her mother in Florida over the phone. The mother granted officers permission to enter the premises, as reported by WHNS.

According to an arrest warrant, officers found 39 cats and three dogs living inside, in addition to several dead cats and animal waste scattered across the floors. Outdoors, 20 more deceased cats were discovered stored inside a non-functioning freezer.

Alicia Capps, 41, and Justin Capps, 34, were charged with three counts of ill treatment of animals and one count of unlawful neglect of a child. They were arrested on Tuesday after they returned from Florida and given $25,000 bonds.
