A Nebraska police captain found herself facing scrutiny from fellow law enforcement after authorities say her 2-year-old daughter was discovered locked inside a minivan while she was off duty.
Mayde McGuire, 54, and her partner, Mary Tobiassen, 49, were both cited for misdemeanor child abuse after another couple allegedly spotted the toddler in the vehicle at Pawnee Lake in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Sunday afternoon. Police said McGuire and Tobiassen had been fishing at the lake when the couple passed a black minivan in the parking lot and noticed the child inside, reportedly “crying and screaming.” After determining the girl was alone and the van was locked, they called 911.
At a Monday press conference, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that McGuire is a captain with the Lincoln Police Department and said she was not on duty when the incident occurred.
Authorities said the toddler was not hurt and was later released back to her parents. According to officials, McGuire submitted to a preliminary breath test at the scene, which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.108.
McGuire has been placed on leave while the allegations are investigated. Both McGuire and Tobiassen received citations for misdemeanor child abuse, but neither was taken into custody. Court dates for the two women were not immediately available.
