A Houston-area man is facing criminal accusations after authorities say his mother’s body was found hidden inside a duffel bag, covered with sheets, while he slept in a bedroom across the hall.

Arman Alexander Malik, 34, has been accused of tampering with evidence and concealing a corpse in connection with the death of Dyna Sorto De Malik, according to court records.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called on Sept. 1 to a home in the 17900 block of Valley Knoll Drive for a welfare check. Family members told authorities they had not heard from Sorto De Malik in several days and said she had stopped responding to calls and text messages, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit.

Sorto De Malik lived at the residence with Malik, investigators said. After deputies forced entry into the home, they found Malik asleep in a bedroom and took him into custody. When they checked another bedroom across the hall, they reported detecting an “odor consistent with a decaying or decomposing body.” In the center of the room, deputies saw sheets that appeared to have suspected blood on them.

According to the affidavit, officers lifted the sheets and found a duffel bag underneath. When they unzipped it, they discovered what appeared to be a human arm. Investigators said blood had soaked beneath the bag and appeared to have been pooling for “an extended period of time.” They also reported seeing blood spatter on a nearby dresser.

Authorities also allege Malik disabled the home’s security system and obstructed cameras that may have recorded what happened inside the residence. He is further accused of changing his mother’s phone setting so the device would lock for an hour after an incorrect password was entered.

After Malik was placed in a patrol vehicle, deputies attempted to speak with him but found him unresponsive, the affidavit says. He was taken to a hospital, where he was intubated.

An autopsy will determine Sorto De Malik’s cause and manner of death. The incident remains under investigation.

Malik has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
