Kevin Marin (Doña Ana County Detention Center).
In a disturbing incident in New Mexico, a young man is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting his mother during a heated argument. This confrontation unfolded during the early hours of Monday morning, following his mother’s remarks about his erratic behavior, according to local authorities.
Kevin Marin, a 20-year-old resident, is now charged with aggravated battery against a family member and an attempt to commit second-degree murder, as detailed in court records from Doña Ana County.
The unfortunate incident took place in their home, located near Santa Teresa Elementary in Santa Teresa. This community lies just northwest of El Paso and near the U.S.-Mexico border, adjacent to Texas.
Also present in the house at the time was Marin’s brother. He later recounted to investigators that he heard Kevin screaming late into the night and urged him to go to bed. Their mother, echoing similar concerns, reportedly told Marin he was “acting crazy,” as reported by El Paso’s Fox affiliate, KFOX.
Marin”s brother was also at the residence, and he reported hearing Marin screaming late in the night. He told Marin to go to sleep, according to El Paso-based Fox affiliate KFOX.
Their mother reportedly urged Marin to do the same thing, saying “he was acting crazy,” according to law enforcement.
The woman then brought Marin to his bedroom, according to the brother, and stayed with him. But at some point, as the minutes ticked on, the house turned into a crime scene.
Around 3 a.m., gunshots were heard at the home. The defendant’s brother went to see what happened and saw a startling sight: his mother was bleeding and had been shot 11 times, KFOX reported, citing a court document.
Marin’s brother took his mother to a hospital, where she was labeled in critical condition. At the home, officers reportedly found multiple casings from a semi-automatic rifle/carbine.
Another woman who was at the home at the time of the shooting said she returned to the residence after the victim was brought to the hospital to find Marin sitting on the living room couch, according to local NBC affiliate KTSM. The defendant would be arrested and charged that same day.
Court records out of El Paso County, Texas, show Marin was indicted in January 2024 on aggravated assault charges.
