In the heart of St. Cloud, Florida, a devoted mother has taken extraordinary measures to ensure the well-being of her teenage daughter, who requires constant care due to her complex medical needs. The young woman, now 18, faces numerous challenges being developmentally disabled, non-verbal, and quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, and she also has limited vision. To navigate these challenges, the family has employed a team of nurses who provide care around the clock, working in shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. within their home.
On a recent Saturday morning, the mother made a distressing discovery. As she checked on her daughter, she noticed red scratches around her mouth and eyelid—marks that had not been there the night before. Given her daughter’s inability to move her limbs, these scratches raised immediate concern. The mother, determined to uncover the cause, reviewed footage from the surveillance cameras installed in their home and promptly contacted the police.
During the time in question, Nia Ayers, a 24-year-old Licensed Practical Nurse, was on duty. Ayers had been caring for the young woman during the Friday night into Saturday morning shift and had been a trusted caregiver in the family’s home for more than a year. Since obtaining her nursing license in 2021, Ayers had maintained a spotless professional record, with no disciplinary actions or complaints lodged against her.
This unfolding situation has garnered attention, and discussions about it have prominently featured on platforms such as Nancy Grace’s show, where experts weigh in on the complexities of caregiving and the responsibilities that come with it.
She has been licensed since 2021 and has not had a single disciplinary action or even a complaint in her nursing career.
