Two Michigan toddlers are in critical condition after police broke into an Inkster home and found them with severe injuries to their necks and throats.

Assistant Police Chief Bill Ratliff said officers went to the home at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday after a 911 call requested a wellbeing check. When police arrived, they got no answer to knocks at the door.

As they were walking around the house, Ratliff said, they heard a child crying inside and kicked in the door, WDIV reported.

Once inside, they found an adult woman and the two toddlers — a boy and a girl. The boy was unresponsive, officers said, and they performed CPR to get him breathing again. He was ultimately airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Detroit for treatment.

“There’s no question in my mind that these two children wouldn’t be here if not for the actions of these police officers this morning,” Ratliff said.

Police said officers struggled with the woman before they were able to take her into custody.

Police did not provided other details on the case, including the relationship between the woman and the two children.
