A shooting incident at a high school in a Maryland suburb near Washington, D.C., on Monday resulted in one student being injured and another taken into custody.
The Rockville City Police Department reported that officers responded to Thomas Wootton High School around 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a student in a hallway suffering from a gunshot wound.
The injured student was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
According to police, the suspect, who is also a student at the school, was swiftly identified and apprehended shortly after the incident, in close proximity to the school premises.
The scheduled press conference to address the incident experienced a delay on Monday evening, as authorities focused on reuniting the remaining students with their families.
County officials have acknowledged the occurrence of the shooting but have refrained from making further statements at this time.
“Our thoughts are with the Wootton students, faculty, and their families during this distressing time. Incidents like this are frightening for all involved,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said, according to Montgomery Community Media.
“We are shocked and heartbroken by the disturbing shooting at Wootton High School, said Council President Natali Fani-González. ” … With the police investigation underway, it is paramount that we remain focused on addressing the gun violence in our community. Guns have no place in our schools.”
