GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Samuel Alexander Gold, 20, was detained today for allegedly tossing a basketball rim over a fence at a fraternity party on October 4, causing serious injury to someone on the other side.
As reported by the University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) officer who responded, around 2 p.m. on October 4, during a game-day event in the backyard of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Gold is alleged to have thrown an 11.5-pound broken metal basketball rim over an eight-foot privacy fence into the backyard of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, which was also having a game-day gathering.
The rim reportedly hit the victim in the head, causing a laceration that required seven staples.
In a post-Miranda interview today at UFPD Headquarters, Gold is said to have confessed that he was intoxicated and had thrown the basketball rim over the fence upon another fraternity member’s suggestion. He claimed he was unaware the rim had struck anyone.
Gold has been charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, a felony. He has no local criminal history; bail will be set on October 10.
