Authorities reportedly interviewed a man in connection with August’s unsolved shooting deaths of a couple at a Utah campsite.

Citing an unsealed search warrant, Gephardt Daily reported that a 27-year-old Moab-area man was stopped for a suspected traffic violation hours before Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, were found. The missing couple was found in a stream near their campsite on August 18. They had been shot multiple times.

According to KSTU, the warrant described the man as “so unnerving that the veteran law enforcement officer decided not to write the speeding ticket as he did not want to take his eyes off [him].”

The man was reportedly interviewed at his job days later. Police wrote that they believed the man suffered from “untreated mental health issues” — as they observed the man vacantly staring at whoever was talking to him and he would provide vague answers to direct questions, Gephardt Daily reported.

According to KSTU, the man claimed to have seen Schulte and Turner at McDonald’s, where Turner worked. The man denied killing the couple, but he could not recall his whereabouts the night of their murders.

However, police noted in their report that the man did not show any clear signs of anxiety while being questioned about Schulte and Turner’s deaths.

“He swallowed but had no other outward sign of nervousness or surprise; he did not shift stance, he looked from the second Investigator to me, his carotid artery did not pulse and his chest did not move quickly,” they wrote.

Before the couple vanished, Schulte reportedly told friends about a “creepy” man at their campsite. She also commented “that if something happened to them, they were murdered.”

On Wednesday, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said that the man has been ruled out as a suspect in the Turner and Schulte’s slayings. The man has not been identified to the public as he has not been charged with a crime, nor was he ever named a suspect.
