A Missouri man has been convicted of murder for killing a woman one day after she ended their relationship “via text message,” fatally shooting her in the temple inside her home.

Darryl Greenlee, 61, was found guilty last week of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the August 2025 death of his former girlfriend, 64-year-old Sheila Mills, in St. Louis County.

Local police discovered Mills dead inside her Northwoods home after her daughter asked officers to conduct a welfare check. According to a criminal complaint, Mills’ hands were bound behind her back and she had “a gunshot wound to her right temple.”

“Victim and defendant were in a relationship of a turbulent nature,” the complaint stated. “Victim ended the relationship via text message.”

The next morning, Greenlee arrived at Mills’ residence at about 6:30 a.m. and began “knocking on her window and calling for her attention,” prosecutors said in the complaint. When Mills answered the door, “defendant forces his way into her residence,” the document said.

Authorities say Greenlee came to Mills’ home with another man, Kevin Shelton, who is set to stand trial in late September on charges including murder, armed criminal action, robbery and other offenses tied to Mills’ killing, according to court records.

Prosecutors allege Shelton was seen leaving Mills’ residence after the break-in and fatal shooting while wearing a mask and gloves. He is also accused of taking Mills’ car and using her debit card to withdraw $140.

Greenlee allegedly left Mills’ home with Shelton and was seen tossing a bag of trash into a nearby garbage bin. Police found the trash bag, which contained a tequila bottle with Greenlee’s DNA on it.

“At no time are any other individuals seen entering or exiting victim’s residence,” the complaint concluded.

Greenlee is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 23. Shelton’s trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 28.
