There is ongoing speculation about whether Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will have a meeting with US President Donald Trump during his visit to the US this week. Albanese has not committed beyond a brief acknowledgment that might occur between the two leaders.

“We engage, we’re friendly, we say what we think, but we also stand up for our national interest.”

Trump last week prompted speculation he would meet with Albanese when he issued a spectacular threat to dob on an ABC reporter who quizzed the president about his business dealings while in office.

“The Australians. You’re hurting Australia, right? In my opinion, you are hurting Australia very much right now,” Trump told ABC reporter John Lyons.

During an appearance on Today, Albanese responded with “we’ll wait and see” when questioned about the likelihood of a definite meeting with Trump in the upcoming days. “They want to get along with me. Your leader is coming to visit me soon. I’ll tell them about you. You set a very bad tone,” Trump had commented.

Albanese has had multiple phone calls with Trump, who has been warm in his descriptions of the Australian leader.

The only planned meeting between Albanese and Trump was set for the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada last June. This meeting was ultimately canceled when Trump left the conference early to return to the White House, just before the US launched an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
