Their real fear is not an overturning of Roe v Wade—protestations to the contrary, the Court is not oblivious to public opinion—but rather that most Justices won’t go along with far-left Democrats’ desires to restrict First Amendment free-speech guarantees, to gut Second Amendment gun rights and to impose unprecedented regulatory burdens on commerce and individuals.
Franklin Roosevelt tried to pack the Court in 1937, when he was at the height of his political powers. The public was appalled, and FDR’s scheme went down to overwhelming and ignominious defeat.
