For longtime Godzilla fans, the franchise is enjoying one of its most thrilling eras in decades. Newcomers also have an ideal entry point, with Takashi Yamazaki’s much-anticipated follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, titled Godzilla Minus Zero, scheduled to open in Japan on November 3 before arriving in North American cinemas on November 6. The movie recently debuted at the New York Film Festival, where it drew enthusiastic responses from critics. Need a quick reminder of what happened in the previous film? Our recap video above has you covered.
The anticipation is understandable. Godzilla Minus One became a major critical and audience success, and Toho has not delivered a direct sequel to one of its Godzilla movies in more than two decades. Fortunately, viewers do not need an encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise before watching. Minus One functions as a reboot and a self-contained story, with its strongest connection to the broader series being its respect for the original 1954 classic.
Godzilla Minus One reimagines the monster’s destruction of postwar Tokyo through the eyes of Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a former kamikaze pilot struggling to rebuild his life after World War II. Alongside the devastation caused by Godzilla, the film explores Shikishima’s bond with Noriko Ōishi (Minami Hamabe) and the young girl they take in, Akiko (Sae Nagatani).
Godzilla Minus One ended on a quiet cliffhanger
The film’s finale sees a group of Japanese sailors and naval veterans devise a plan to bring down Godzilla. Shikishima ultimately delivers the decisive strike by piloting a bomb directly into the kaiju’s mouth, though he manages to survive. When he returns home, he discovers that Noriko, believed to have died during Godzilla’s attack on the mainland, is alive. Their emotional reunion offers hope, but a mysterious mark on Noriko’s neck hints at something far more troubling. The closing image is equally ominous, revealing fragments of Godzilla at the bottom of the ocean as they begin regenerating.
Those unresolved developments, along with the enormous popularity of Godzilla Minus One, left the door wide open for another chapter. This time, however, Godzilla may not be the only colossal danger. The trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero features the unmistakable roar of his legendary enemy, King Ghidorah—the three-headed space dragon. That strongly suggests the new movie will deliver a long-awaited clash between two of the franchise’s most iconic monsters.
