The anticipation for “Dune: Part Three” has reached new heights with the release of its first trailer, offering a fresh glimpse of Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. The preview teases a compelling continuation of the saga, filled with familiar faces and intense drama revolving around the House of Atreides. This aligns with the dramatic and dialogue-rich narrative style of Frank Herbert’s “Dune: Messiah,” the novel on which the film is based. Notably, however, the book doesn’t dwell much on action sequences.
While “Dune: Messiah” does contain some action-packed moments, including tense religious scenes involving Paul’s sister, Alia, and a few of the typical plots and duels synonymous with Herbert’s universe, it lacks the large-scale battles that marked the conclusion of the first part. This poses a unique challenge for the filmmakers in maintaining audience engagement with less emphasis on grandiose action.
Following the intense combat scenes that characterized “Dune: Part Two,” the filmmakers faced the challenge of captivating viewers with a narrative less reliant on spectacle. Judging by the trailer, director Denis Villeneuve and his team appear to have ingeniously addressed this by incorporating a storyline the book largely omits: the Holy War, a 12-year-long religious conquest. This addition seems poised to enrich the cinematic experience.
By the time “Dune: Messiah” begins, Paul is already entrenched in a sprawling interstellar conflict. His Fremen forces have claimed vast territories, and he presides as the Padishah Emperor over an empire built on warfare. The narrative alludes to these past horrors without delving into them, leaving much to the imagination.
However, the trailer for “Dune: Part Three” hints at an effort to fill this narrative gap, bridging the conclusion of “Dune: Part Two” with the subsequent events in “Messiah.” It promises to showcase the Holy War that solidified Paul Atreides’ dominance, featuring vivid depictions of Fremen fighters across multiple battlefields, showcasing diverse cultures, planets, armies, and technologies.
Dune: Part Three looks set to share a lot of new details about the Holy War
This approach suggests that the film will offer a more graphic and comprehensive portrayal of this period in the story, potentially setting the stage for “Dune: Messiah.” By doing so, it aims to provide audiences with a deeper understanding of Paul’s dark history and the moral complexities that define the final chapter of his journey.
In contrast, the new trailer for “Dune: Part Three” suggests it’s going to bridge the gap from “Dune: Part Two’s” ending to that future point in “Messiah.” If that happens, we’ll get plenty of scenes of conquest from the Holy War that brings Paul Atreides to power. Already, in the trailer, we have a smorgasbord of graphic battlefield detail as Fremen fighters are depicted not on one battlefield, but several. We see different cultures, planets, armies, and technologies.
The takeaway is that we’re probably in for a much more graphic and detailed cinematic depiction of that part of the story. This could set up the events of “Dune: Messiah,” helping audiences understand the full weight of Paul’s past and why the last chapter of his story is defined by his grappling with the horrors he’s unleashed.
