Contains spoilers for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
By the time “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” reaches its finale, one thing is hard to dispute: the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given fans one of the strongest live-action Spider-Man outings in years. The film’s box office performance backs that up in a major way, and Looper’s video above breaks down exactly how “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” became such a massive theatrical success.
Following 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was never going to be easy. That film swung for the fences with a multiverse-spanning story that united three generations of Spider-Men, pairing Tom Holland’s MCU hero with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield while also bringing back some of their most formidable villains.
Rather than trying to simply outscale its predecessor, “Brand New Day” shifts the focus inward. The movie follows Peter Parker as he commits himself fully to life as Spider-Man, even as isolation sets in and dangerous new enemies begin to emerge. This version of Peter is more wounded, exposed, and emotionally fragile than audiences may be used to, and that creative choice appears to have paid off. Destin Daniel Cretton’s latest MCU entry has quickly established itself as one of the summer’s biggest crowd-pleasers.
The Brand New Day buzz was off the charts
Anticipation for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was enormous, even by the already towering standards of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans spent months dissecting every rumor and clue, including the theory that Sadie Sink was playing Jean Grey in “Brand New Day” — a theory that ultimately proved correct. With that level of speculation, combined with the record-breaking legacy of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it always seemed likely that the new film would make a strong showing in theaters.
Even so, the scale of “Brand New Day’s” theatrical success may still come as a surprise. Recent signs of superhero fatigue have hurt several Marvel releases, with some landing among the lowest-grossing MCU movies to date. This time, however, Marvel clearly has a major win. For a full look at how “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” dominated the box office, Looper’s video above lays out the key details.
