In some respects — though it might initially seem humorous — Alan Cumming’s most challenging role yet is on “The Traitors.” Even while he emphasizes his Scottish brogue for this “character,” his on-screen “name” remains Alan Cumming. It’s worth noting that the castle he claims as “his” on the show’s set is definitely not his. So, how does Cumming handle it?

“I feel like it’s a huge acting job,” Cumming shared with The Hollywood Reporter during an August 2024 roundtable discussion, shortly before his dual Emmy wins. “I view it as a character. Obviously, it’s me — named Alan Cumming — but it’s not really me. My voice doesn’t normally sound like that. I don’t dress that way. I don’t own a castle. Unfortunately, that’s not my reality.”

Moreover, Cumming — an openly queer man whose NYC venue, Club Cumming, frequently showcases queer artists and serves as a safe space for the community — believes that “The Traitors” has positively impacted LGBTQ+ representation during challenging times. In March 2025, Cumming candidly expressed his opinions to Buzzfeed. He stated:

“‘The Traitors’ is a distinctly queer show. I’m centrally involved, exuding queerness with my extravagant outfits. This year, two of the winners are queer individuals, which is wonderful. I advocated for improved representation in the show, and that’s certainly been achieved.”

By mentioning “two of the winners,” Cumming refers to former “Bachelor” contestant Gabby Windey — who has recently married her partner Robby Hoffman — and Lord Ivar Mountbatten, a pioneering openly queer member of the British royal family, who shared the prize money with Dylan Efron and “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Dolores Catania. Cumming remains optimistic about “The Traitors'” potential influence. “Amidst all these oppressive, horrific laws and attitudes against the queer and trans community in America today, it’s uplifting to see so many queer people, and hopefully trans individuals, showcased in a program that also embraces dressing up, androgyny, femininity, and queerness,” Cumming added. “Hopefully, we can challenge viewers: If you enjoy all that and love this show, maybe reconsider supporting parties that aim to marginalize and harm these communities.”
