A former Michigan charter school teacher is facing charges after police say she “exploited” a minor through a 2023 sexual relationship.
FOX 2 Detroit reports that 26-year-old Jocelyn Sanroman has been charged with third-degree sexual conduct.
In 2023, during her time as a teacher at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school in Waterford Township, Sanroman reportedly entered into an inappropriate relationship with a student who was 16 years old.
The situation came to light when a parent alerted the police, prompting an investigation. This followed reports that the defendant had confided to a colleague about having sexual relations with a student.
“The defendant is accused of exploiting her authoritative position to take advantage of a minor,” stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “These allegations mark a severe violation of the trust that parents and the community place in educators.”
McDonald added that although a 16-year-old can consent to sexual relations in Michigan, it’s illegal when an educator is involved.
“It’s because we need to make school the safest place it can be for kids, right? Safe from gun violence, safe from assault, safe from sexual assault,” McDonald said. “School is supposed to be some place where your kids feel safe.”
The school released the following statement after learning of the alleged incident:
“We strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the students entrusted to our care. Their safety and well-being remains our top priority.”
Sanroman faces a possible 15 years in prison if convicted. Check back for updates.
