A probe is currently in progress following the discovery of a body in a bayou on Thursday, marking the sixth such body found in a waterway of a Texas city over the past two weeks.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the unknown body was located in the Buffalo Bayou, close to the University of Houston-Downtown. A student from the college, Jade McKissic, was found deceased in Brays Bayou on September 15, five days after she disappeared near the campus.

Reports indicated that 13 people have been found in Houston-area bayous this year. Five of those bodies were discovered in a six-day span.

This latest body find came just two days after Houston authorities dismissed speculations about a possible serial killer in the area. Officials conveyed to the Houston Chronicle that there is no evidence linking this recent case to the other bodies discovered earlier this month.

“I must emphasize that speculation must be curbed, out of respect for the affected families and the 2.3 million residents in our region. We face challenges, and we are addressing them, but having a serial killer on the loose in Houston is not one of our current challenges,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire stated on Tuesday.

Beyond McKissic’s case, officials have not publicly disclosed the identities of the other bodies recovered from Houston bayous. Reports suggest that one of the bodies has been identified; however, authorities are withholding the name until the family has been notified.
