Hundreds of corellas have been found dead in a suspected poisoning in the regional Victorian town of Horsham.

More than 50 birds were found dead near the Wimmera River on Tuesday last week, but the number has since risen to 300.

Horsham Rural City Council crews have been removing the bodies, both in the river and in the surrounding areas.

“Poisoning wildlife is both illegal and hazardous, and we urge the community to share any information that might aid in identifying those responsible,” stated conservation regulator chief Kate Gavens.

The Victorian conservation regulator is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Gavens added, “We have begun investigating this matter, and it’s critical for the community to contact Crime Stoppers with any CCTV footage or if they have noticed anything unusual, especially around the Wimmera River in Horsham.”

The public is advised not to handle or move any dead or ill birds. Instead, they should capture images, note the location, and report any groups of five or more to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.
