Michigan church shooting leaves 2 dead, suspect identified as 40-year-old man

A gunman who drove his vehicle into a Michigan church, set the building ablaze, and fired at the congregation has been identified by authorities as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, from Burton.

The incident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township. At the time, approximately 150 people were attending services. Officials reported that the suspect emerged from his truck with a weapon resembling a rifle and began shooting aimlessly.

Police confirmed that two individuals lost their lives. Seven others are in stable condition, while one remains critically injured. Law enforcement officers fatally shot Sanford during a gunfire exchange.

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye expressed concern that the death toll might increase, as additional victims are suspected to have perished in the blaze that engulfed a significant portion of the chapel. Authorities have yet to disclose the number of possible additional casualties inside.

“During Sunday worship services a gunman opened fire, and early reports indicate that multiple individuals were injured,” stated a release. “We urge cooperation with local authorities as more information comes to light.”

The church announced it is collaborating with local law enforcement as the investigation proceeds, and expressed gratitude to all emergency responders assisting the victims and their families.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and concern from so many people around the world,” the statement said. “In moments of sorrow and uncertainty, we find strength and comfort through our faith in Jesus Christ. Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”
