Texas Dems set to return home amid California's redistricting call

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s prospects of becoming the 2028 Democratic nominee are on the rise, at least according to the prediction site Kalshi.

Newsom’s odds of representing Democrats on the next presidential ballot spiked over the last three days, rising to 27%.

Kalshi determines odds based on market contacts, and Newsom currently leads in this regard, with a notable gap between him and other potential candidates.

Newsom has been in the news recently amid a redistricting battle that began in Texas and has moved nationwide.

Republican states have announced plans to redraw district lines mid-decade, an initiative led by former President Donald Trump, aiming to bolster Republican dominance in Congress by creating more secure districts for conservatives and disrupting predominantly Democratic regions.

In response, Texas Democrats fled the state to block a quorum and postpone the vote, taking refuge in blue states. Democratic governors, such as Newsom, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, have hinted at redrawing their own district lines to counter GOP strategies.

Among these governors, Newsom has seen the most significant increase in his odds, currently estimated at 27%. He is trailed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, at 13%, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 9%, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who stands at 5% based on the latest figures.

For the Republican nominee, Vice President JD Vance leads with 55% odds on Kalshi.
