WASHINGTON – Anthropic said Friday it has pulled its newest artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, from service in response to a Trump administration directive aimed at preventing access by foreign nationals.
The move represents the most sweeping U.S. effort so far to limit availability of cutting-edge AI systems. Anthropic had only broadly launched Fable earlier this week. That model is a scaled version of the more powerful Mythos, which the company has already kept under tight restrictions because of cybersecurity concerns.
In a statement, Anthropic said it objects to how the government handled the order, saying the directive arrived Friday afternoon without detailing the specific national security risks involved. “We believe the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a statutory process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts,” the company said. “This action does not adhere to those principles.”
Anthropic described the situation as a “misunderstanding” and said it is working to restore access to the models “as soon as possible.”
The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The decision comes 10 days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order creating a framework for the federal government to review the national security risks of the most advanced AI systems for as long as a month before public release. Under the order, participation by AI developers would be voluntary.
