BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A tragic incident from 2022 concluded with a sentencing, as a woman involved in a deadly hit-and-run that sent a cyclist into the Indian River received a nine-year prison term.

Anabel Morales, 35, was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened back in June 2022, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. (Orange County Sheriff’s Office)

Anabel Morales entered a no-contest plea on Friday to charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Her arrest followed several months after the June 2022 incident that led to the death of 56-year-old Stephan Morf.

The crash report details that Morf was hit by a vehicle, causing him to plummet from the State Road 520 causeway, a drop estimated to be between 30 and 50 feet, into the Indian River.

Just minutes before the unfortunate event, surveillance footage from a 7-Eleven captured Morf as he made his way toward the causeway, heading home to Cocoa.

“I was in shock,” a 7-Eleven employee recounted to News 6. “He was the kind of customer who would even tip us for bagging his groceries.”

The U.S. Coast Guard later retrieved Morf’s body, and he was declared deceased at the scene by authorities.

Troopers said Morf was later recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard and pronounced dead at the scene.

Morales previously pleaded not guilty before changing her plea to no contest.
