Major League Baseball has officially removed Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz from the team, as announced on Thursday, due to an unspecified investigation involving the right-handed starter.

He will be inactive through at least July 17, according to an MLB statement.

“Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave until the end of the All-Star break as a result of an MLB investigation,” the league stated. “We will refrain from commenting further until the investigation has reached a conclusion.”

The American League club also confirmed Ortiz’s status.

The Guardians released a statement saying, “The Guardians have been informed by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz is on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation.”

“The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process.”

The 26-year-old born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic is 4-9 so far this season with a 4.36 ERA.

He’s struggled with control in 2025, walking 4.3 batters per 9 innings, above his career average of 3.9 free passes.
