FDA Alert: Salmonella Outbreak Traced to Popular Supplements Sold at Sam's Club Nationwide

Health officials have recently linked nearly a dozen salmonella cases across seven states to powdered supplements available at Sam’s Club, as announced this past Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alongside the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively investigating the Member’s Mark Super Greens Powder Supplements. These supplements, which have been distributed both in-store nationwide and online, are at the center of this salmonella outbreak.

Due to potential contamination with salmonella bacteria, the CDC has confirmed that these products have been pulled from Sam’s Club shelves. The specific contaminant has been identified as moringa leaf powder found in the supplements.

States such as Kansas, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and Michigan have reported illnesses associated with the product. The CDC has noted that, thus far, three individuals have required hospitalization due to the severity of the infection.

Further investigations by the FDA traced the source of the salmonella contamination to a single batch of organic moringa leaf powder, imported from Vallon Farm Direct located in Jodhpur, India.

Michigan and Virginia health officials collected and tested samples of the product from the homes of people who contracted the illness.

Research from the National Institutes of Health says Moringa is a plant native to India and other countries that is known for having essential nutrients such as protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

The CDC says salmonella can cause symptoms that include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.

Infections can be severe in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, who may require hospitalization, the agency said.

The CDC noted in its report that more Vallon Farm products containing moringa leaf powder may be added to its list to avoid as the investigation continues.
