MARGARITAVILLE, Fla. – Linda invited us over to Margaritaville to show us her community mailbox, which is left all day in the sun and exposed to the weather.
She could get her key into the lock but couldn’t easily turn it to unlock the lock. Surely enough, the lock was starting to corrode. So we lubed it!

We purchased:
Silicone spray
We brought with us:
Nothing
Step 1
Get the right spray lubricant. Initially, you may think of WD-40, but experts advise against it. They say WD-40 is a penetrating lubricant that doesn’t last long, and oil can attract dirt. Instead, they recommend using a silicone spray or graphite spray. We opted for silicone spray.
Spray 2
Generously spray the inside lock mechanism of the mailbox. Spray into the turning mechanism. It’s even better if you can turn the key while spraying the lock mechanism.
Step 3
Spray the key. If possible, remove the key and spray both sides. Then, spray into the lock’s keyhole (utilizing the straw that comes with the spray helps here). Insert and remove the key repeatedly to spread the lubricant, which should make removing and inserting the key easier and help the lock turn more smoothly.
You just got results at home!
