CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A dedicated group of Illinois football enthusiasts is urging the university to revert to the original name of its football stadium, just a month after the facility underwent a name change.
For a century, the Fighting Illini Football team played at what was known as Memorial Stadium. Last month, in honor of a historic donation, the venue was renamed Gies Memorial Stadium. The substantial donation came from alumnus Larry Gies, who wished to honor his late father, Larry Gies Sr., with this gesture.
During a press briefing, Director of Athletics Josh Whitman emphasized the importance of recognizing Gies’s contribution while maintaining the legacy of the stadium’s original name. He stated that incorporating “Memorial Stadium” in the new name was non-negotiable. Gies agreed to this compromise, allowing his name to be added without completely replacing the original name.
The name change sparked varied reactions, with some supporters understanding the decision and others preferring the original name be preserved. Now, a faction of fans is taking steps to address their concerns.
