Marching Illini to perform at 2026 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Marching Illini is bringing its musical expertise to New York City next year for a significant edition of a prominent entertainment spectacle.

The University of Illinois’ College of Fine and Applied Arts has revealed that the university, along with the Marching Illini staff, received and accepted an invitation for the band to participate in the 2026 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Accompanied by parade officials, Marching Illini Director Barry Houser shared the exciting news with the band’s 350 members on Tuesday morning.

“This is a testament to our students and the effort they invest daily,” Houser stated. “It’s thrilling for our students to gain national recognition for their remarkable efforts.”

Out of hundreds of marching bands from all over the country who vied for a spot in the 2026 parade, the Marching Illini was among the select 10. This will be their second appearance in the parade, having first performed in 2015.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, hailed as the leading program of the holiday season, has held the title of the largest entertainment event in the country since 2020. The 2024 parade was witnessed by roughly three million spectators in New York and 31 million viewers nationwide. Moreover, 2024 was a landmark year, marking the 100th anniversary since the parade’s inception.

Despite this milestone, the 2024 parade was not the centennial edition; it was the 98th due to a two-year suspension during World War II. The 100th parade edition will occur in 2026 — the year the Marching Illini will perform.
