Richmond Co. Sheriff captures shoplifter after foot chase

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sheriff Eugene “Gino Rock” Brantley acted swiftly when notified of an ongoing shoplifting incident at the Walmart on Wrightsboro Road on May 16th.

Around 5:03 p.m., the store’s Loss Prevention Manager informed Sheriff Brantley that a man had left the premises without paying for goods. She pointed out that the suspect was heading on foot toward North Leg Road, in the direction of the Wife Saver restaurant.

Sheriff Brantley immediately chased after the suspect, catching him on a side street near the eastern side of the store. Deputies responding to the scene, including Deputy Butcher and Lieutenant Fanning, soon took control of the situation, identifying the suspect as John Henebery. Following this, warrants were issued, and Henebery was transported to the Richmond County Jail.

Sheriff Brantley stated, It’s all in a day’s work. The men and women working the streets deal with this type of crime every day. So when I have the opportunity to be involved and prevent crime or apprehend someone breaking the law, that’s what I do. We must bring safety and security back to the streets of Augusta, Georgia — one day at a time.”
