SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – The Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin baseball team is advancing to the 2A state semifinals, even though they feel they haven’t yet reached their peak performance.

The Cyclones beat Monticello 4-3 in the Super-Sectional round. The win came despite five errors made against the Sages.

“Just maintaining confidence throughout the game is key. Errors will happen,” explained junior Carson Butler. “As a shortstop, I face many opportunities for mistakes, but it’s all part of the game.”

“Our coaches always believed we would overcome the five errors,” junior Drew Ward added. “This shows the underclassmen stepping up, taking on leadership roles, and helping the team move forward from those mistakes.”

SHG enters the final weekend of the season at 24-8-1.

“We’ve had some good wins early in the season,” junior Ty Springer said. “Some rocky roads in between there, but I thought we could get this win.” “It’s nice to finally get here.”

SHG plays Eureka on Friday at 4 p.m. in Champaign.
