CHATANOOGA, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that an inquiry has started following the fatal shooting of a man by a Chattanooga police officer during a burglary response on Thursday morning.

Preliminary details from the TBI indicate that Chattanooga Police Department officers were called to a burglary around 2 a.m. on Hamill Road’s 2100 block. Upon arrival, they encountered 44-year-old Kevin Barnes attempting to escape in a car.

A police officer then shot Barnes “for reasons still under investigation,” the TBI said. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.

11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp has requested TBI special agents to look into the incident. As the investigation continues, the TBI will present their findings to Wamp, who will decide if the shooting was warranted.
