In CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., a portion of Interstate 5 is set to close temporarily on Saturday afternoon for a live-fire military demonstration, sparking safety concerns among state officials. The event, scheduled at Camp Pendleton, has drawn significant attention due to its proximity to the bustling I-5 freeway.

Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong disapproval of the federal government’s decision to proceed with the demonstration. He criticized the move, emphasizing the risk to public safety posed by conducting live artillery fire near a major highway.

Newsom stated, “The President is prioritizing personal pride over safety. It is not only incorrect to fire live rounds near a busy road; it is perilous.”

State officials were informed of the planned exercises, scheduled to occur from October 17-18, which include live-fire drills close to I-5. Signage has been posted to alert drivers about “Overhead fire in progress.” Observations by state personnel on Friday reported a practice round near the freeway. The federal government confirmed that live fire activities would commence at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, as per the governor’s report.

Consequently, the California Highway Patrol has mandated a temporary shutdown of a segment of I-5 near Camp Pendleton for the duration of the exercise. This decision highlights concerns over “extreme life safety risk” and the likelihood of drivers being dangerously distracted by sudden loud explosions.

In addition to the freeway closure, train service between Orange and San Diego counties has also been canceled for Saturday, following federal direction.

The I-5 freeway is a critical economic corridor for Southern California, with thousands of travelers daily. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, plan alternate routes, and expect delays on I-5 and surrounding highways throughout Saturday.
