CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A week-long celebration is happening right now in Champaign County. It’s called Welcoming Week.
This year’s theme is “Stories We Share.” It’s a celebration and movement fully embracing immigrants and their contributions to the city.
Champaign County hosts over 25,000 residents who were born abroad, and Welcoming Week serves as an opportunity to showcase how these individuals enrich and empower the community.
Officials with the City of Champaign said that they’re hoping the celebrations go beyond just this one week.
“Immigrants are an integral part of our community, and it’s crucial to recognize their presence and contributions. Supporting them is key to building a stronger and more inclusive society where everyone feels they belong. We aim to engage everyone, encouraging them to share stories and shape a future where the celebration of diversity is a core value in our community,” expressed Julio Velasco, Community Relations Specialist for the City of Champaign.
The week features more than twenty events, culminating in a festival on Sunday that includes food, music, and various activities at the downtown plaza from noon until 3 p.m.
