What's next for the Tampa Bay Rays? Fans weigh in after last home game at George M. Steinbrenner Field

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bay Rays concluded their final home game against the Boston Red Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field, which serves as their temporary venue due to ongoing roof repairs at Tropicana Field caused by damage from Hurricane Milton.

The team’s lease at the Trop runs through the 2028 season, but their future beyond that remains uncertain.

The franchise is in the final stages of a sale expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

Prospective owner Patrick Zapulski has indicated a desire to retain the team within the Tampa Bay region, considering potential locations such as Ybor City or the area near Steinbrenner Field.

Fans across the region are weighing in on where the team should call home.

Brant Colp of Clearwater said he’s glad the team has been able to finish the season despite the stadium repairs.

“It was really great that they managed to lease the facility to continue the season,” Colp stated. “That’s the main thing. A playing venue is essential for every team.”

Some fans said they’d like to see the Rays return to their current home or move closer to Tampa.

“I don’t really know, but I really hope they do back to the Tropicana,” said Tara Fenlon of Clearwater. “Either there or even closer to here Ybor.”

Jason Gordon of Lutz said the proposed location sites offer some convenience.

“Either one’s fine. Somewhere on the water would be nice though,” Gordon said. “I like it here in Tampa, it’s an easier drive.”

Others pointed to West Shore as an ideal spot.

“I want them on this side, so their final location doesn’t matter to me,” expressed Regina Toller from Land O’ Lakes. “I think West Shore would be ideal because it can attract fans from St. Pete to our area. We’re eager for the announcements.”

The Rays have six games left in the regular season.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ 2026 season starts on the road with a nine-game trip, but their home opener will be April 6 against the Chicago Cubs.
