Alanis Morissette has publicly identified as pansexual at the age of 52.
The Jagged Little Pill singer discussed her sexuality during a recent episode of the Handsome podcast, hosted by lesbian comedians Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster alongside non-binary screenwriter Mae Martin.
The conversation turned to Morissette’s famously emotional and angst-filled music when Feimster told her, “I’m sorry for the men that hurt you, but I’m not sorry for the songs that came from it.”
Feimster then asked, “Did it make you want to be a lesbian at any point?”
Morissette answered without hesitation: “I’m pansexual, so yeah.”
Notaro appeared surprised by the disclosure and asked, “Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?”

“I am,” the mother of three replied with a nod. Martin then added, “Me too!”
Pansexuality generally refers to experiencing romantic, emotional or sexual attraction to people regardless of their gender identity or sex.
While bisexuality is commonly understood as attraction to more than one gender, the terms can be defined differently by different people and may overlap in meaning.
The Head Over Feet singer has typically kept her personal relationships private, although she has been romantically linked to several high-profile men.
Morissette has also spoken candidly in the past about struggles with love and sex addiction.
Her relationship with Full House actor Dave Coulier is widely believed to have inspired material on her best-selling album, Jagged Little Pill.
She also dated actor Dash Mihok and attorney Tom Ballanco, and is now married to rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway.
The Grammy-winning singer began dating Ryan Reynolds in 2002. The couple became engaged and remained together for three years before ending their relationship in 2007.

Following their split, Reynolds began dating Scarlett Johansson two months later. He married Johansson 18 months afterward, and they divorced in 2011. He went on to marry Blake Lively in 2012.
In 2008, Morissette’s interview with Howard Stern about the breakup drew widespread attention. During the conversation, she attempted to laugh off intrusive questions about her sex life and said she had needed therapy five days a week to cope with the heartbreak.
Looking back on the interview, Morissette told The Sunday Times in June that it felt like “the ongoing normalisation of me being invisible.” She added that she would respond very differently to similarly personal questions today.
“I have a million questions I could ask back that would be equally inappropriate. It just became normalised to hurt women every day, call her a b****, tell her she’s a slut,” she said.
When Stern referred to her earlier comments about attending therapy five times a week after the breakup, Morissette stressed: “Therapy’s not about the guy… It’s about me. It’s not about the guy.”
Stern also questioned her about Reynolds quickly beginning a relationship with Johansson. Morissette paused before he pressed her, asking whether Reynolds had come home and announced that he was seeing “another broad.” She answered emphatically, “No.”
Asked whether she had anticipated the breakup, Morissette nodded and acknowledged that she had prepared herself for the relationship to end.
Stern then asked whether she believed Reynolds was the kind of person who moved on immediately after falling for someone else. Morissette replied, “I can’t speak for him, I have no idea.”

Morissette married the rapper, also known as Mario Treadway, in 2010. Together, they have two sons and a daughter, whose ages range from six to 15.
“There are just so many qualities in him that were slam-dunky,” she told The Sunday Times of her husband.
“If I would talk about something on a date, typically the person would look at me quizzically like I was strange. It was the complete opposite with Souleye. He had zero desire to clip my wings.”
Morissette has said that she previously dealt with love and sex addiction, experiences she has associated with being an empath.
The singer is currently appearing in her Los Angeles residency, Butterfly with a Machete, a production combining music with personal storytelling.
