What a whirlwind 72 hours it has been for the U.S. men’s hockey team. Following their nail-biting victory against Canada to clinch the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, the team jetted off to Miami, where they had an entire nightclub belting out the National Anthem and other patriotic tunes. Their celebrations didn’t stop there; the team then boarded Air Force One, heading to Washington, D.C., for a meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office. Later, they were special guests at the Capitol for the State of the Union address.

Golden Triumph: Olympic Hockey Champions Make White House Appearance, Gear Up for State of the Union

During their visit, President Trump not only recognized the team’s remarkable achievements but also revealed that Connor Hellebuyck, the team’s standout goalie, would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Trump said:

But I just want to tell you that the members of this great hockey squad will be very happy to hear, based on their vote and my vote — and in this case, my vote was more important — that I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor, which has been given to many athletes over the years… but when I say many, not too many, like 12.

It’s called the highest civilian honor in our country, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

While much of the media attention in the last two days has been deservedly been aimed at Jack Hughes, who scored the “Golden Goal,” Hellebuyck’s performance in goal was simply stunning and, in this writer’s opinion, he should have been named the Most Valuable Player instead of the Canadian.

Here’s a bit more about Hellebuyck’s journey to the NHL and the Olympics – it’s a good one.

Editor’s Note: With President Trump back in the White House, the state of our Union is strong once again.
