Chicago Bears stadium update: No deadline for deal, Kevin Warren says, as Kam Buckner says Arlington Heights, IL talks progressing

The ongoing debate about the future location of the Chicago Bears’ stadium has seen new developments, with an Illinois lawmaker expressing confidence in the Arlington Heights proposal over Indiana. Recent remarks from the Bears’ leadership indicate that the team remains patient with the legislative process in Springfield.

During an interview on NBC’s “Pro Football Talk,” Bears President Kevin Warren addressed concerns about the timeline for finalizing a stadium deal in Arlington Heights, suggesting there is still ample time to reach a decision.

“We haven’t set a strict deadline, but I am optimistic that by this spring or summer, we’ll have clarity,” Warren stated.

His comments arrive amidst mounting pressure on Springfield lawmakers to pass a bill by the month’s end. This legislation aims to provide the Bears with property tax assurances and funding for necessary infrastructure.

Some advocates worry that without swift legislative action, the Bears might lose patience and consider relocating to Hammond, Indiana, where state lawmakers have already approved their own stadium bill.

“The Bears’ announcement today is significant. They did not impose a fabricated deadline but approached the matter with genuine intent,” remarked Illinois state Representative Kam Buckner, D-Chicago.

Buckner has been leading negotiations with the Bears, which he says continue and are progressing.

“There’s large agreement on most parts of this, which is, you know, makes me feel very optimistic about the path forward,” Buckner said.

Buckner says some of what is still being negotiated has nothing to do with the Bears. The megaprojects bill would apply to any developer investing more than $500 million.

“There’s questions about what kind of businesses, industries can use this. There are some of my colleagues who are concerned that data centers and battery farms may run roughshod on this,” Buckner said.

Lawmakers return to Springfield April 7, and Buckner says he is confident that a bill will be passed before the spring legislative session ends on May 31.
