Amazon has introduced an affordable online marketplace in Australia, as its billionaire CEO Jeff Bezos aims for the “trustworthy” brand to rival the rising success of Shein and Temu.
Last week, Amazon Haul launched in Australia, presenting hundreds of thousands of products priced under $25, along with attractive promotions and sales.
“Australians prioritize value and convenience when shopping online, and we’re thrilled to offer more choices through the familiar shopping app they already love,” stated Amit Mahto, Manager of Amazon Marketplace Australia.
Pang, however, believes Amazon’s brand could help raise the standards across other cheap online marketplaces.
“They are likely to leverage their brand image, known for reliability and excellent customer service, to hopefully inject some compliance regarding product quality,” he mentioned.
“I think the end game here is not competing with price, rather than competing with value for money. So reasonably priced, but good quality.”
Shein and Temu said they require their sellers to comply with local laws and standards.
A Shein spokesperson remarked that the site adheres to a code of conduct. If non-compliant products are identified, Shein promptly removes them to investigate further.
A spokesperson from Temu indicated it has a robust quality assurance system, encompassing seller and product listing vetting, physical spot checks, as well as monitoring and enforcement measures.
Temu is also looking to be a signatory to the ACCC’s voluntary online product safety pledge.
