Renowned author Craig Silvey, celebrated for his award-winning novels, is facing serious legal troubles as his books are being removed from store shelves in response to charges of child exploitation.

The 43-year-old writer, known for his acclaimed works such as Jasper Jones, Runt, and Honeybee, was taken into custody on Monday after authorities conducted a search of his residence in Fremantle.

Silvey has been formally accused of possessing and sharing child exploitation material, alongside allegations of engaging in online conversations expressing a sexual interest in minors.

In light of these charges, educational materials related to Silvey’s book Runt have been recalled in Victoria, as confirmed by the education department.

A spokesperson from the Victorian Department of Education stated, “Craig Silvey’s works are no longer included in the Victorian Lesson Plans, are absent from any VCE English, VCE English as an Additional Language, or VCE Literature lists, and will not be part of the 2026 Premier’s Reading Challenge.”

Following these allegations, Silvey’s fans have been vocal on social media, sharing videos of themselves discarding his books after his court appearance yesterday.

Silvey was granted bail yesterday under strict conditions.

He has yet to plead to the charges.
