A domestic flight in the US erupted into chaos after two pigeons somehow ended up onboard the aircraft.

The Delta Airlines flight from Minneapolis to Madison, Wisconsin, encountered a delay on Saturday (local time) when two pigeons began flying through the cabin.

The chaos commenced right after the plane had completed boarding, with video footage capturing a pigeon flying around as a passenger attempted to catch it with his jacket.

Another passenger, Tom Caw, whipped out his phone to start recording.

“I went to sit down and overheard a passenger approaching the flight attendant who was standing nearby, and she said, ‘I think there’s a pigeon on this plane,'” passenger Tom Caw recounted.

“Then the pilot got on and said ‘attention ladies and gentlemen, we have a wildlife situation on the plane…this is not something I’m prepared to deal with, so we are summoning some crew to come on'”.

Local media reports said that baggage handlers were then called onboard to safely remove the birds.

However, when the plane started taxing down the runway, another bird emerged.

The pilot was forced to return to the gate and contact air traffic control.

“You ready for this? There’s a pigeon on the airplane,” the pilot can be heard saying in a call to air traffic control.

“There’s a pigeon on the Airplane…that’s a first for me,” the air traffic controller replied.

”Yeah, and it’s refusing to leave,” the pilot said.

Once the second bird was removed, the plane was able to take off.

The flight arrived in Wisconsin an hour late.

Delta later apologised for the delay.
