An investigation by Israeli authorities into the deaths of 15 Palestinian medics in Gaza last month, reportedly caused by Israeli forces, has concluded there were “professional failures.” This has led to the dismissal of a deputy commander, signifying one of the harshest reprimands in the ongoing 18-month conflict.
The military inquiry, which was made public yesterday, revealed that the deputy battalion commander mistakenly identified the ambulances as belonging to Hamas militants, attributing this misjudgment to “poor night visibility.”
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israel’s military campaign has resulted in the deaths of over 51,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children. The distinction between civilians and combatants is not made in these reports. The conflict has devastated large areas of Gaza, crippling food production, and displacing roughly 90% of the population. Many people are now residing in temporary shelters and damaged buildings.
Frustration has been growing on both sides, with rare public protests against Hamas in Gaza and continued weekly rallies in Israel pressing the government to reach a deal to bring all hostages home.
