In the early hours of Sunday, Oslo police were alerted to a “loud bang” or explosion at approximately 1am local time (11am AEDT). Thankfully, no injuries were reported, according to an official news release from the police.

During a press conference on Sunday, Frode Larsen, a representative for the Oslo police, confirmed that the explosion stemmed from an incendiary device. The investigation is currently focused on determining the perpetrators behind this act and uncovering their possible motives, as authorities suspect the embassy was specifically targeted.

Reports from local media indicated that the explosion resulted in minor damage to an entrance of the embassy. Witnesses described the scene as engulfed in thick smoke following the blast. Police are actively seeking out eyewitnesses to gather further details about the incident.

In response to the event, the Norwegian police security service, PST, has deployed additional personnel to manage the situation. However, Martin Bernsen, a communication adviser for PST, noted that the country’s terror threat level remains unchanged.

Reacting to the incident, Justice and Security Minister Astri Aas-Hansen issued a statement expressing strong condemnation. “This is an unacceptable incident that is being treated with the utmost seriousness,” she affirmed, highlighting the gravity with which authorities are approaching the investigation.

“This is an unacceptable incident that is being treated with the utmost seriousness,” said Justice and Security Minister Astri Aas-Hansen.

“The police have stated that they are investigating the case with significant resources, and that nothing indicates the situation poses any danger to the public.”

The US Embassy in Oslo referred media queries to the US State Department, which did not immediately return a request for comment. Nor did Oslo police.
