A widely-used video chat application has been officially cautioned by eSafety as Australian authorities express worries about its potential misuse for child exploitation.
OmeTV is a popular roulette-style video chat app that matches strangers, including adults and children.
This app is highly favored by youngsters in Australia, ranking as the 11th most popular social networking app on the Apple App Store and holding the 9th spot for free social applications on the Google Play store.
While OmeTV has received a formal warning, several other platforms, such as Chatroulette, HOLLA, and Monkey, also pose risks to young users if proper safety protocols aren’t in place.
Many anonymous chat platforms operate without age checking and pair users randomly, often without protective filters.
In addition to issuing formal warnings, eSafety is empowered to take further actions, including imposing civil penalties that could reach up to $49.5 million, to protect Australians, particularly the youth.
“The primary objective is to motivate individual service providers and the online industry overall to improve and emphasize safety,” stated Inman Grant.
